Old School methods in type display

Today I started working on some ‘old school’ signage. I really like they way that signs used to be hand painted onto different surfaces and dependent of the type of surface, how the information might be read by people.

My test was to paint type onto wood. I love the type used and as you can see from the template, I have altered it slightly as to give a more customised finish. I really like the use of two colours and the way the paint sits on the wood; on close inspection the wood grain really alters the type and takes it into a different dimension from that of when viewed from a distance, where it gives a smooth glossy finish.

There was also something very therapeutic about working this way. Something I think digital computerized type tests can not achieve.
