I don’t know why I am posting this as there is not much point but all the same I must post my thoughts.
Now although I love the self-publishing photo-book industry, it kiils me to see how badly the [photo] industry has been hit by over processed, under skilled, under though and worst of all OVER HYPED IMAGERY.
I struggle with how highly saturated the business of “intellectual” photo making has become… Now I know this sort of talking will cause a stir but I cant help feel that one of the main reasons is that almost every person on the planet now has a picture making device, and it seems that they all consider themselves photographers for taking a picture or two. But what makes it worse is that it is these people that make up majority of online social photo sites, and it is for this reason the market it becoming so saturated. If YOUR work is only discussed by someone of the same level [and that not being very high], then how can you consider it to be good feed back. It is very important that such image makers seek the critical views of ‘higher thinkers’ that surround the world of image making.
For me, the sad thing is that in the years to come (and even now), it is these so called “photographers” that will be the curators, exhibitors, publishers and “heads” of the industry. This is a true concern for the industry.
It is such a shame that only a small percentage of work that makes it into the self-published market is worth a dam. Now please don’t take me wrong, I clap my hands at the people making any sort of work, effort and love they have for the medium. But it is imperative that wider thinking is put into play.
Dont let such a great visual communication medium fall foul to more saturation and false hype.
Thank you for letting me rant.
